Start with the tiles
The tile set is the center of the table, so readability comes first. Numbers, suits, winds, dragons, flowers and Jokers should be easy to recognize from a normal seated position.
Check the exact tile dimensions and contents before buying rather than relying only on photographs. Some sets also include spare tiles, so the total number in the box does not always tell you everything about how the set is configured.
Choose a design you enjoy looking at, but make sure decoration never gets in the way of comfortable play.
Give every player a rack and pusher

If your set travels to weekly games or weekend trips, a structured carrying case and removable trays can make packing much easier. If the set mostly stays at home, organization and presentation may matter more than portability.
