Before buying, check the exact tile dimensions rather than relying only on product photos. Also make sure the tiles fit comfortably on the racks you plan to use.

Don’t judge an American Mah Jongg set by the total tile count alone. For standard American Mah Jongg play, make sure the set includes eight Jokers along with the full mix of suits, winds, dragons and flowers. Some retail sets also include spare or replacement tiles.
Look at the complete contents list and confirm what is included beyond the tiles. Depending on the set, racks, pushers, dice, a wind indicator, playing surface and storage may be sold together or separately.
The current year’s American Mah Jongg card is typically a separate playing reference, so check the product description rather than assuming it comes with the tile set.
Think beyond the tiles
The tiles may be the centerpiece, but the rest of the table changes how the game feels. Racks and pushers help organize play, while a mat or tablecloth can define the playing area and soften the sound of the tiles.
If you are building a complete setup, consider whether the pieces work together in scale, color and storage. Buying everything separately can give you more freedom; choosing a coordinated collection can make setup easier.
Think about the whole table, not only the box of tiles.

For a set that stays at home, presentation may matter more. If you carry it to weekly games, prioritize secure storage and easy packing.
Choose for the way you gather
The best set is not necessarily the largest, brightest or most expensive one. It is the set that works for the people who will actually sit around it.
If you host new players, prioritize readability. If the set is a gift, presentation and storage may matter more. If your group plays every week, comfort and durability deserve extra attention.
